Winning Poem - Competition no 26: Write a poem in the form of two separate diary entries

I got the news today, oh boy by marcmandy

Jan 2011
I got the news today, oh boy
Itís not the kind of news that gives you joy.
I cannot swallow well, you see
It turns out Ďcause Iíve got the nasty CÖ
Itís run throughout my Ďsophagus
And makes eating real foods a massive fuss
Iíll have to get the chemo till itís improved
And then have the whole damned thing removed
After Iíll go to chemo once again
I have no idea how thisíll end
This whole thing makes me truly fear
That Iíll not be here when comes next year.

February 2021
They say itís my birthday
Well happy birthday to me!
Ten years ago the world looked very bleak
I lived day to day and week to week
At 60 years I thought i was done
And wouldnít live to 61
I somehow pushed through the pain and fear
And believe it or donít, Iíve made it to here!!
I got through a surgery ten hours massive
And a drug haze that drove me passive
Months and months i was like a zombie
With a mind that was quite swampy
Then four years hence, it returned, though minuscule
I had to have radiation and more chemo cruel
Yet somehow I got through it all
Without getting to the final fall
So yeíll not here any complaints from me
As i celebrate birthday seventy!

(#5396492) Competition no 26 - Write a poem in the form of two separate diary entries
Posted by HeatherN on 13 Jul 2022 at 2:30PM
Your task is simply to write two diary entries in a poetic style of your choice.

You should date your entries which can be anything from an hour apart to 80 or 90 years apart, but something should have happened in between the entries to form a connection.

You can title your poem anything you like, as long as they are not all called "Dear Diary".

The entries don't have to be from your own viewpoint. You could write from the viewpoint of a historical character, or even a futuristic character, real or imagined.

Here are the basic instructions. I am not going to give any examples this time as this is a very personal topic, and any examples I give might sway you from your own ideas.

Rules

1 Write two connecting poems in the form of date-headed diary entries e.g.

12th January 1942
Blah Blah Blah

19th October 1966
Blah Blah Blah

2 The entries should be written by the same person with a connecting theme between the entries, with an event having happened in between to create contrast.

3 Each diary entry can be in a different style of poetry, but each should be no longer than 20 lines long, making a maximum line-count of 40 lines.

3 Give your poem a title.

Any questions, please ask.
