It is a very regional thing more based on accents.
I never say saLmon, I say sammon.
Solder also has a silent L for me (Jools-it's not soldier, it's the melting of lead, I think that's pronounced sodder in England too.)
As to pronouncing the double r in mirror and squirrel- I've never heard mi-or or squi-el, so I'm not sure what you mean.
