1 quart zip lock bag
50% water
50% rubbing alcohol.

put the equal amounts of water and alcohol into the zip lock bag and freeze over night.. It ends up like that "gel" that you buy in the pharmacies..

Save the wax bags from boxes of crackers and cereal to use when you need to pound out chicken or other meat to tenderize it. They are thicker than Ziploc bags or Saran wrap so they don't tear and they are free so you save money.

Your headlights may have begun to yellow or discolor, which can lower your visibility at night. If you want to get your headlights back to its brightness, consider applying a layer of Crest toothpaste to your plastic headlight covers. Polish toothpaste before wiping away with a rag to reveal the sparkling surface underneath.

(#5327252) Lights, Lights, Lights
Posted by LittleTree on 5 Jan 2022 at 7:34AM
During the winter when it gets dark so early, I like to have warm lights on around the house. I turn on my different colored glittered lava lamp, I have tiny, LED lights in my plants (and artificial plants, too) and also turn on grow lights for plants that cast a purple cast.
I think it looks cozier.

Christmas lights balled up after last year's display? Instead of throwing them out, turn your tangled outdoor lights into a showstopping spectacle by laying them in a planter and topping with branches.

TV GUIDE.. LOLOLOL.. Oh yeah do remember those things. and also remember the tree out of them.. Just wanted to joke around. pepperbeach..

Yankee Rose.. that was a very creative way to decorate your tree..

What my hubby and I did was since we got married in May, the week after Christmas we bought all our Christmas decorations for the next year.. Sooo Maybe my hack would be for newly engaged couples (if they do get married now a days) to purchase all your decorations for all the holidays and hopefully have somewhere to store them.. My parents had a huge attic in our home and we just took a small corner under the slanted part of the roof.

(#5319138) Christmas Card Holder
Posted by Lil Red on 16 Dec 2021 at 1:45PM
All you need is a coffee can and yarn. You cut the top and bottom off of the coffee can. Take the yarn and tie on the inside of the can, going inside the can and out, make sure the yarn is close. Keep doing this until the whole can is covered. Tie the yarn on the inside. When you get Christmas cards, take a card and pull through one piece of yarn, it will be inside the card, holding it. This way, you can look at your cards any time you want. Christmas is over, put away until next Christmas and use again.

when I was a child I would take the old weekly tv guide we get in the mail and I would fold the pages inwards like a triangle. Once I was done it looked and shaped like a tree, I would spray paint it red and then put some glitter on it and colored bulbs on it. A lot of people will probably ask..what's a tv guide......LOL

That was sweet of them. Since its just me, I don't decorate anymore (to hard to do), I gave all my decor to my daughter (she lives over 800 miles away).
I did buy me a teeny tiny tree from the Dollar store, but its staying up in the closet this year.
(#5318750) Handmade Christmas creations from the family
Posted by katja on 15 Dec 2021 at 8:21AM
To me, the best Christmas decorations are those that my children and grandchildren have made. Every year, their festive pictures made at school are put up on the walls and their handmade ornaments are hung on the tree. We share stories of Christmases past when my son hangs an ornament given to him by his first grade teacher or a handmade creation of my daughter finds its way onto the tree. One ornament has her picture as a young girl and it always makes us smile. Whatever they create is my favorite because it was made with love by them.

When my grandmother stopped putting up her Christmas tree, my niece and nephew started decorating her fake potted tree in her living room. Their Christmas cheer was undeterred and Grandma agreed because she didn't have to do anything. They got down the ornaments, decorated, cleaned up, and took it all down and put it away after Christmas was over. Everyone was happy.

Keep Christmas lights wrapped around a clothes hanger to prevent them from tangling.
Whatís more frustrating than untangling a massive knot of Christmas lights? No clothes hanger? No problem. Then wrap Christmas lights around the box they came in for easy storage.

Toilet roll cardboard holders
Wrapping paper
Celletape

Wrap the wrapping paper around the cardboard holders and celletape it in-between the holes. Piece a little hole in each holder at the end and thread through the tinsel tie the end up so the holders don't come off and you should have something like this

(#5308176) 8 Thanksgiving Leftovers You Can Store in the Freezer and 3 You Can't
Posted by HeartOnFire on 20 Nov 2021 at 10:47PM

8 Thanksgiving Leftovers You Can Store in the Freezer and 3 You Can't:

Can Freeze:
1) Turkey meat - up to 2 mos. remove meat from bone, slicing will help to defrost evenly, pour a bit of gravy over meat so it will retain it's moisture.
2) Turkey Carcass - up to 2 mos. If you can't make stock within a couple of days, seal in a heavy-duty freezer bag. Can use later to make turkey stock for soups.
3) Mashed Potatoes - up to 1 yr. Freeze in dollop portions on baking sheet until solid, then freeze in freezer bag or airtight container.
4) Sweet Potatoes Ė up to 1 yr. Freezes well, whether you're freezing roasted potatoes or a casserole. Marshmallows and crumbles don't freeze well, add fresh when reheating sweet potatoes.
5. Some Gravies - up to 4 mos. Flour-based gravies can be frozen, milk-based gravies will separate when defrosted. Seal in the smallest airtight container.
6) Cranberry Sauce Ė up to 2 months. Both homemade and store-bought sauces, even canned, can be frozen. Leave headspace in jar, sauce will expand during freezing.
7) Some Pies Ė up to 2 mos. Most freeze well, especially apple, pecan, and pumpkin. Fluffy pies, like chiffon and mousse don't freeze well. Defrost slowly in refrigerator, the texture may change slightly.
8) Stuffing Ė up to 1 mo. Stuffing is quite resilient, go ahead and freeze in a tightly sealed bag. After defrosting, toast stuffing on a baking sheets to refresh texture.

Don't Freeze:
1) Baked and twice-baked potatoes
2) Green bean casserole
3) Salads
These items do not freeze well, go ahead and eat them within a couple of days.

I always make turkey and mushroom risotto, you can also add any leftover cream. We normally make this at a later date using the frozen down turkey

Here is just one website where experts say it's a little-known trick but it does work. There are several other websites saying the same thing also. Where I wrote about this above with the picture, that came from a different website than what I'm posting below:

(#5306265) Applying Ice Packs to your Turkey Breasts Ahead
Posted by HeartOnFire on 15 Nov 2021 at 5:03PM

(unknown photo)

Use ice packets to keep turkey breasts cooler at the start of the roast and juicier throughout the cooking. Applying ice packs to the turkey breasts is a lesser-known trick.

Turkey breast is arguably the best meat the bird has to offer, but it is also the first to dry out, thus the need for foil wraps to retain moisture and regular basting during the roast. But you can mitigate this drying out by prepping the breasts ahead. While the turkey is still in the fridge, apply ice packs to the turkey breasts, so they're a colder temperature than the rest of the bird. After the hours spent roasting, moist, fully-cooked turkey awaits.

You know how it is. After a few weeks or days your bin gets a rather unpleasant odour. Here is a little hack

If you have got any water with floor cleaner left in the bucket after you done mopping. Put a little in the bin ( kitchen bin ) swirl it around. And then use the mob to get rid of the dirt.

Then spray some kitchen spray in the bin and use cloth to clean inside. The. A old towel or one you going to put in the washer. To dry it.
(#5304541) Re: Compound Butter Turkey Hack

This is what we use
2 sticks unsalted butter
4 tbsp fresh, finely chopped sage ( 2 tbsp if using ground )
2 tbsp fresh, finely chopped rosemary ( 1 tbsp if using ground rosemary )
1 tbsp fresh, finely chopped thyme ( 1/2 tbsp if using ground )
1 tbsp kosher salt
1 tbsp course black pepper
1 tbsp poultry seasoning

That makes the turkey moist, and gives it a lot of flavor

Paper products are in short supply because most of the pulp is going for delivery boxes.
The newer oatmeal boxes are now being made much flimsier. Save the old one (if you haven't gotten rid of the last more sold box already) and pour the oats from the new flimsy one into the older more solid one.
P.S. the new lid won't fit the old box.

We use to do this. Yes you put the whole turkey in the bag to cook and close the bag (we stapled it close).
As for the juices for gravy, you get some. But we took the neck, and other parts and boiled them in water then used that to make the gravy with.

Cooking a turkey in a brown paper bag is a great way to keep the meat moist. It also helps with the clean-up. No messy oven or pans to soak and clean! I've done this several years.

Make sure you coat the bag with vegetable oil first.

Depending on how you serve turkey, this tip could come in handy. (If you carve directly from the turkey to peopleís plates, skip this one.)

So at last, itís time to carve slices from your finished turkey and arrange them on a platter. But before you do, spoon a very shallow pool of turkey drippings from the roasting pan to the platter. These drippings will keep your turkeyóa lean meat prone to drying outónice and juicy as it sits on the table.

Got foggy headlights? Don't buy an expensive product to clean those. Use your toothpaste.

If youíve felt the pain of having frozen locks on your car door, you know how hard that problem can be to solve. The answer is something you may not have expected ó hand sanitizer. Pouring something INTO the lock that doesnít work may seem counterintuitive, but the alcohol in the solution will melt the ice, and then youíll be able to turn the lock. Itíll dissolve on your car the same way it does on your hands.

If you want your wine chilled, but donít want to dilute the flavor, try sticking some frozen grapes in your glass instead of ice cubes. After your wine is gone then you can eat the grapes... ahh the flavor

If I tried brussel sprouts, I would use the very young bud. When I've so-called pickled my eggs, then I use the brine to pour on any weeds around my back sidewalk. If heated up, it works better to kill the weeds.

You can also buy pickling cucumbers and slice them and put them back in the pickle juice and again allow to sit out on the counter for 4-5 days and then put into the fridge to chill. You can also cut up some fresh veggies and place it in the juice and allow it to stand ..

As moisture evaporates from your carved jack-o'-lantern, it will slowly turn brown and shriveled. Keep your pumpkin hydrated by applying petroleum jelly to the cut surfaces, which seals in moisture to slow down dehydration. You can also rub the jelly along the inside of the gourd for extra protection against rot.

(#5297736) Wax Paper Hack
Posted by lwmc on 24 Oct 2021 at 7:36AM
This is not my own. I got it word for word from taste if home.
But I thought it was worth sharing. Sorry if I should not have.

paper can make chores so much easier.
Weíre all in favor of cleaning hacks that make chores easier to do. This simple move will save you from hours of climbing up on a step stool to clean hard-to-reach places.
Your roll of waxed paper will save you from having dusty cabinet tops and grease splatters around the kitchen!
What Is the Waxed Paper Hack?
Itís so simple: You place a sheet of waxed paper on top of hard-to-see surfaces. Instead of sticking to the tops of cabinets, particles will stick to the surface of the waxed paper. Then, when itís time to deep clean the house, all you have to do is carefully fold the sheet up, toss it and replace with a fresh one.
If you have a powerful ceiling fan, or want to place the waxed paper somewhere that may be drafty, use double-sided tape to secure the paper in place and ensure that no dirt or grime can get underneath it.
The sheets of waxed paper should be replaced every three to four months. To help you remember, swap the sheets when you switch out seasonal decorations. For example, top the cabinets with fresh waxed paper when youíre bringing out the pumpkins for Halloween, then do it again when youíre putting away holiday decorations.

To make this kitchen hack more environmentally friendly, wipe the sheet of waxed paper with a damp cloth, and then get rid of the dust in the washing machine. You may still be dusting, but at least you donít have to reach up high to do it!
It Works Beyond the Kitchen, Too
This hack also works well in low-traffic rooms. You can line dressers and chests in a guest room that donít see much use. Right before your guests come to town, toss the dusty paper. Itís an easy way to make an out-of-town guestís visit less stressful.
Now that waxed paper has saved you from hauling out that step stool, see what other ways the humble roll can be useful around the house.

(#5293874) Re: Cockroach killer
Posted by laura lee on 14 Oct 2021 at 4:44AM
I use this (so I don't get bugs, including ants) I line it against my house under my carport (I put fresh down in the Spring, then again anytime I wash down the carport) and by my front door. Also put some in a bucket of water and used that to wash my side porch. I also open the door to the crawl space under the house and toss some in as far as I can.
If you do have bugs take the stuff out of your bottom cabinets, wash cabinet, let dry, then line this powder along the back edge where some can slip down under the cabinet base. Put some under your stove, washer/ dryer, around the pipes coming up under your sink.
This powder can also be used (wouldn't do it all the time) on your animal if really infected bad with flea's. (make sure you get it down in, not laying on top of the hair).
Can also be put In a sprayer to spray your yard when you know its Not going to rain for a few days. (spray about a foot up from ground onto house).

Diatomaceous earth cuts them up, dehydrates and kills them.
Lightly dust with it around clean and dry baseboards and anywhere you have seen roaches. This won't work in wet areas.

Wish you were close by, most of these strays would be great barn cats. (they stay away from people, including me and I feed them) lol
I tried to find a farmer around here. But we are a county with no shelter (surrounding county's won't take them from here), due to that and people
not fixing pets, we are over run with strays. I have managed to get 5 fixed so far. (2 of who disappeared afterwards to be replaced with new strays) Sad
But now due to my health I don't have the energy to set the traps (then having to re-set if I catch one that
is already fixed)), also getting harder to get the vouchers to help with the cost.
Not sure how much more I can do. but its not the cats faults... its people turning them loose when they decide they don't want them anymore.
(#5293651) Re: Mice Repellent

Lol...we feed corn for the squirrels. (which is why mice hang around) As long as they stay outside I have no problem with them. Usually they don't come inside as we have a barn. A few strays wouldn't hurt.

(#5293628) Mice Repellent
Posted by LittleTree on 13 Oct 2021 at 1:28PM
Ever have trouble with mice coming into your house?

Last winter I had an invasion of them making nests in my dresser drawers. Got rid of the babies (which I hated to do but they were chewing on things, including my Kindle case, and making a mess) But a week later; another nest was there, even after disinfecting them all.

Dryer sheets repel them. I put them in my dresser drawers, chest of drawers and under my bed. I even put them wherever I could think of that they might be drawn to.

Viola! No more mice and the sheets leave a clean smell.

Not sure how long they might last but they will be replaced as needed! Much better than mousetraps or poison.

(#5293548) Ticks
Posted by laura lee on 13 Oct 2021 at 12:36PM
Someone had posted about putting vinegar on a tick bite to stop the itch.
I had a tick on me awhile back I couldn't get out, so I took a cotton ball, put some vinegar on it then Dish soap, hold it on the tick for a bit, them rub it one way and the tick came out on the cotton ball.

One time my cat had a black spot on her rear leg with blood around it, (it was a tick really imbedded) I took the spray bottle with vinegar and dish soap in it and sprayed it on the spot. A hour later when I looked the black spot was gone with a hole left there. Was able to then treat the area with peroxide. Saved me a costly Vet trip.
she was outside so I didn't have to worry about the tick being in the house anywhere.

Just saw this on my FB feed and wondered if it works:

- With the stomach flu going around, try this if your kiddos, spouse, relative, or you are throwing up. Get a can of fruit in heavy syrup (I suggest peaches, itís what Iíve always used). Take a tablespoon of just the syrup every 15 minutes for an hour. If you get sick in between that hour, restart.
- This is a tip a nurse gave me while I was pregnant the first time. It literally was a life saver for all 3 pregnancies and any time my husband or I have had the stomach flu.
- My husband thought I was crazy the first time he got sick around me and was throwing up so often he started throwing up stomach acid and blood.. He finally tried the peach syrup and literally didnít get sick anymore. Feel free to pass this on cause a lot of people seem to be sick right now, it could help them a lot!

When you take them out, they will be as fresh as the day you put them in the freezer.

I have an opened bag in the freezer right now with "sell by" date of August 3rd and they are just as fresh as the day I opened them. High five

I drink pineapple juice a lot. It really does help with swelling and I haven't had the flu in years and years. Of course, a flu shot helps!!

As we had enough entries we will be voting by poll! High five

Your entries are important for Life Hacks! So please post your favorite or any hack you like off the internet. All are welcome by our players! Please just make sure you post a new comment with yours and name it. Thank you

Winner to receive one of the above tokens. I'll be throwing in a surprise periodically, too! Grinning

October hacks start Oct.1st. Post as many as you'd like but your first one counts in the polls. Thumbs up

Feel free to vote even if you don't have an entry!

Posted by LittleTree on 25 Sep 2021 at 7:06PM

It won't be long until entries are put up for vote. Cheerleader

I love all the hacks entered!! However to be fair to everyone, only one hack per person (first one entered) will be entered for voting purposes. But please do not let that deter you from posting any hacks you think would be useful to all, at any time. Inside and outside the home. Feedback on any hacks are appreciated!!

Please post/enter a new comment on new hacks so it won't get lost.

Voting will be determined by unbiased voters here on GoldToken instead on a voting poll to helpfully avoid continual repeat winners with so few entries entered. We want all to have a chance to win a token. I will not be voting. This board is limited to these tokens for a year, so after a year there'll be new tokens made if the board is successful.

If the board should take off and more players join, that will probably change and more tokens may be offered. So be sure and tell your friends; not only about the contest but about all the different life hacks! I'm sure enjoying them and learning! How 'bout you guys?

(#5285626) Fountain Cleaner
Posted by LittleTree on 24 Sep 2021 at 1:03PM
Does anyone have any decorative outside fountains that get white, hard water build-up all over it, spoiling the looks?

You can clean it with vinegar to remove the hard water spots but I found you can spray WD40 around on it (avoiding the water) and it makes it look shiny and new with no water deposits visible.

It also lasts a long time. I did mine in May and it just now looks like it could use another round but as I will be putting it up for winter in a few, I'll wait till next spring.

Since the holidays will be here soon, when you bake cookies, and you put them in plastic containers, put a slice of bread in with them, it will keep them soft, but don't put in frosted cookies. When the bread gets hard, toss out and feed the birds, and put another slice bread in. My Grandma and my Mom both did this.

Boric acid added to sugar or fat kills ants too. Balled up and placed in a prescription bottle with holes driiled into it keeps it away from pets. Ants die over time and the queen is killed as well as the workers take this to her.

Two simple hacks you can do. To stop it or warm it up to kill the cough germs

1. Put some milk in a cup or mug and heat in a microwave for 4 or 5 minutes or boil in a pan until hot and bubbling and then put in cup. ( Warm milk )
2. Put some lemonade In a cup and put in the microwave for 4 or 5 minutes till hot ( warm lemonade )

1) Spray Windex on any ants that make it into your house. Kills them instantly and safer than commercial bug spray, especially in your kitchen.

2) If you have a stubborn spot on your floor, spray it with Windex a couple minutes before you mop. The Windex will loosen it and it will come right up when you mop.

Squeeze any excess water from the cloth so it is only damp. Then gently dab it on the cell/mobile screen
Then get a towel to dry the screen out
And within seconds your screen Will become clean and clear.

there are 2 other ways to get rid of fruit flies too...

Fruit flies hang around drains that are dirty and have standing water. Keep your drains cleaned and to get rid of em.
Either a little cup of margarine where they are the most concentrated. They hate margarine, also a little cup of red wine will do too. They fly in the wine and die. One time I did that and the cup was full of fruit flies. You can put plastic wrap around the top and poke little holes in it or just leave it uncovered.
(#5280960) Re: Fruit flies

David I do that but use a solo cup, put a little vinegar in & wrap the top with saran wrap then put a rubber band around the rim so they can't get out then I punch holes in the wrap with a toothpick. When I get a few gnats in the cup I take it outside and release them Smiling

1oz of white vinegar
1 oz of dish detergent (Dawn or Palmolive)

Method:
dab on some of the liquid and use an old toothbrush and brush it onto the Stain. (I used it for Pasta sauce)
Put a towel under it and keep brushing it till it comes out. then hand wash and make sure it's all out.

(#5279233) Dryer Sheets / Fabric Softener
Posted by HeartOnFire on 8 Sep 2021 at 9:26AM

Use Aluminum Foil instead of Dryer Sheets

A great way to make your clothes static-free and avoid static cling that works. For those looking to avoid buying expensive fabric softeners, have allergies, or run out and are in-between fabric sheets.

Start with 2-3 sheets of aluminum foil, about a foot long each, and ball them up together.

Then you toss it into your dryer along with your clothes. That's it!

The ball will come out looking a little smoother afterwards from bumping around in there, but other than that, no real visible change, and the laundry will come out being completely static-free. It's a bit amazing and you can still use the same ball for up to a year.

(unknown photo)

How to Make an Inexpensive Liquid Fabric Softener

A homemade fabric softener recipe for those pinching pennies, but your clothes will come out feeling soft and smelling good.

Here is what you'll need:

12 oz container of hair conditioner ( I use Suave because it's inexpensive and comes in lots of scents), 1 1/2 cups of distilled white vinegar, 3 cups of really warm water, funnel, and an empty bottle.

Simply add all of the ingredients together in a bowl and whisk until fully mixed together. That's it!

Grab the funnel and bottle and pour it in!

The disc should then play normally.

(#5274561) Re: Clogged Pipes?
Posted by fatdaddy on 28 Aug 2021 at 6:08PM
I make my own "Foaming Drain Snake".

First turn on the vent fan (or open a window)

Pour a cup of bleach into the sink.
When that has drained add another cup of bleach.
After that second cup has drained add two or three drops of shampoo.
Add 1/2 cup of Instant Power Heavy Duty Drain Opener (in the yellow jug).(I get this at Walmart)
When that has drained add 1/8 cup of hydrogen peroxide.
If it does not foam add a couple drops of shampoo again and 1/8 cup bleach

Periodically rinse the dried foam from the sink with a little splash of hydrogen peroxide.

Let it sit overnight if you can then run hot water through the drain.
(#5274427) Clogged Pipes?
Posted by LittleTree on 28 Aug 2021 at 9:07AM
First, pour baking soda down the drain.

Next, slowly pour the vinegar into the drain so that it fizzes and foams, which is the chemical reaction you desire.

Hint: Don't pour the vinegar too quickly or you will merely flush everything down the drain and it won't clean like it is supposed to.

Now, wait until the vinegar and baking soda stop bubbling, which could take about five minutes or so.

Finally, slowly pour a pan boiling water down the drain. This step helps flush away the clog that was already loosened by the reaction of the baking soda and vinegar.

You may need to repeat this step a few times, depending on the severity of the clog.

Of course, if you need to repeat you may also want to use a plunger on the drain, along with this method to help clear the drain of any blockages.

This really works for a lot of clogs and just might save a plumber's bill!
