Crossword Puzzles - An amiable gathering of word-type people trying to solve word puzzles together. Hosted by HeatherN
Please read the Discussion Board Rules before participating in the discussion boards.
A board to solve crosswords - both cryptic and straight, UK style grids.
Crosswords will be solved clue-by-clue, with the solver choosing which clue comes next.

There is a mixture of themed crosswords of different sizes. If you have any suggestions for any themed crosswords you would like to solve, please post on the board or send a message to HeatherN who will compile all the crosswords.

Crossword tokens will be awarded to the top three solvers for each crossword. The solvers are to be recorded on a "Solvers' tally" for each crossword."

Bonus Mystery Words

4 All crosswords of 13X13 or larger, starting from when the first “Names” crossword started (not sure when that was) will feature (usually) three mystery words.

4 The letters will appear on the grid in three different colours, and when all the letters of one colour have appeared, you can unscramble the letters to guess the mystery word, whether or not you are guessing a clue as well.

4 Please do not try and guess the mystery word before all the stated number of letters of that colour have appeared, even if you are certain you know what the word will be. If you do, you will be disqualified from guessing when all of the letters are present.

4 If you get the word correct – you will get an extra point on the Solvers’ Tally.

4 All three words in any one crossword will have the same number of letters, the number of which I shall state in the blurb for that particular crossword, and I will also state what the three colours are.

4 For 13X13 crosswords the words will be either 3 or 4 letters’ long; for 15X15 crosswords the words will be 5 or 6 letters’ long; for 17X17 crosswords, the words will be either 7 or 8 letters' long.

4 If it is a themed crossword, the words will be related to the theme. If it is a themeless crossword, the words will be related to each other.

4 The 11X11 crosswords, for example “Pictures”, “Goldies” and the current “Animals” puzzle will not incorporate the Bonus Mystery Words feature.

tHe *fOUR* *-* HOUR *RuLe*

If more than one crossword with a clue to be solved is on the board when you visit, you may only answer one clue at that visit. You may then revisit the board after a minimum four hours have elapsed and answer another clue if still available. This is to allow for time differences and players' work commitments etc. This does not apply to collaborative crosswords such as the alphabet, number or story crosswords. Thank you for your co-operation.

Three letter words

With immediate effect, to speed things up a little bit, if you choose a clue with a three-letter answer, you must also choose another three-letter answer clue. This is because three-letter words are generally easy to solve. If there is only one three-letter left, you should choose another clue with the next shortest answer in addition to the three-letter word clue. The solver must get both clues correct to win a point on the tally.

Some types of crosswords will be exempt from this, but I will state this with the instructions for individual puzzles.

Thank you for your co-operation!

(#5574361) Pairs Clue 26A and ???
Posted by HeatherN on 25 Jan 2024 at 6:16PM

26 Across & ???: 1945 Musical Comedy, directed by George Sidney (7,6)

Solvers’ Tally

Jools 11A&15D; 27A&1D; 3D&25A; 7D&18D; 8A&2D, 9A&20A (6)

Straycat 5A&1A; 6D&21D (2)

The four-hour rule should be kept as only the first all correct answer will count

The three-letter word rule does not apply to this crossword as two clues are already solved at the same time

There are four mystery bonus words – i.e. two pairs to tie in with the theme of the puzzle. All four have four letters, and the colours are yellow, blue, green and grey. Although there are two pairs of words you should guess the words as normal i.e. when all four letters of one colour appear. The pairs of words do not affect the allocation of tally points.

Instructions

7 The clues in this crossword come in pairs. There will be some sort of connection between the two answers.

7 You will be given one clue for both answers, but you will only know the location of one of the answers, but you will be given the number of letters for both answers.

7 The links between the words will vary. It may be synonyms, a first and second name or something else which will be given with the clue.

7 To get the point, you need to get both answers. Therefore, if you think someone’s answer is incorrect on either or both of the answers, you could post an alternative solution. Sometimes there may be several possible answers.

7 The first clue I give will give you an idea of what might be involved, although the link will not always be on the same lines.

7 When I check the answers, I will say if someone has got both words correct. If some have only one correct, I will say this but if more than one person has posted I will not say who has one correct. I will just say the number of people who have one answer correct. You may then have another guess, provided you have not posted an answer to this or any other puzzle in the last four hours.

7 I hope I have explained this correctly. Anything you don’t understand, please ask, and I will amend the rules to clarify.

7 Solvers may choose which clue they want next, but if they choose the unknown clue location from the last answer, I will choose the next clue.

7 A tally will be kept, but only one point will be given for both answers, half-correct answers will not be awarded any points.

Pairs 1, 2 and 3 all happened to be completed simultaneously, so all three crosswords will run concurrently.
