(#5304834) Re: longer games on 3 day time outs

I've just recently completed a match of 9 point long gammon that ran to 3 years & 3 months (1205) days, encompassing 7 games. But it wasn't a tournament match limited to 3 days per move & 6 months overall & is therefore just as irrelevant to the topic under discussion as your 3 year game on the beta site.

That is not long. I just finished a game on beta that took 3 years to finish

There are two distinct factors which play a rôle in having games time out on the six month limit.

1. Some games are simply inherently long & slow enough that they could possibly run foul of the six month limit, one example being 9 point long gammon particularly if little or no use is made of the doubling cube, games are played out to the end when the outcome is inevitable, & the players are well enough matched that winning margins in each game preclude gammons & backgammons.

2. Some games such as dominoes & various of its variants allow the possibility of playing out an entire round over a considerable length of time with the winner of the round gaining very few or sometimes even zero points as a result.

The first issue can be solved by the simple expedient of either not including those long, slow games in tournaments with a six month limit, or (my preference) applying an appropriate time limit to each different game type depending on the characteristics of each game. The current situation in which 9 point long gammon & 1 point hypergammon both have a six month time limit makes no sense at all.

Games such as dominoes are not susceptible to such a simple solution, however, given that a match could last a much longer time if a considerable proportion of rounds fail to deliver any significant number of points to the winner each round. A more sophisticated timeout mechanism is required to allow matches to continue indefinitely provided that contestants are making their moves timeously & that therefore tardiness is not the reason for matches dragging on. I suggest that a possible solution is for each player's time clock to only start running 24 hours after the preceeding move is saved. The time limit of three days per move will continue to be applied as it is currently, it does not affect nor is it affected by the overall match time limit, the only effect is to allow the match to continue indefinitely provided that the contestants are making their moves timeously.

I agree re the 500 point Rummikub games. As Shilotte says our games are about to be curtailed because of the tineout and yet we both play most days and several turns each day. The problem with Rummikub is that you can play a whole round and the winner only make a handful of points (or even just 1 point on some occasions). With close games this means you might need around 50 rounds to conclude. I have had another 500 point Rummikub game timeout in this way again with neither player excessively drawing things out. I definitely think this should be reviewed - maybe don't use 500 point games in tournaments with a 6 month time limit.

Hi all I have mentioned about this before.... the 6 month time limit on the longer games simply do not work. I have recently been playing a 3 day time-out out game of 500 point Rummikub with littleblue a game which we have both enjoyed but because of the 6 month total limit on it it has spoiled the game. Would it be possible to have a tournament to run alongside these for the longer games such as Backgammon 9 & 7 point & all the variants of 500 point Rummikub games? I have timed out against 1 player who only plays on here 1/2 an hour a day while I play most days for 8 hours! it is a ridiculous situation in my mind is there anyone else who feels this way?

Sir Geoff is a Platinum member. He probably has auto-vacation enabled and this can take a VERY long time to run out. Theoretically Platinums are allowed 60 days per year and at a rate of 5 days per week this should run out in about 3 months. I've seen it take much longer than this.

I have tournament games that should have timed out... they keep on going, yet the person has not been here since June 2021, the games are set up... forfeit game.. why are these still active.? in reference to Sir Geoff's games.

these games are holding up a lot of tournaments..
