GoldToken's Monthly News

Thanks to the graphical genius of marcmandy and coding skills of Mecir, GoldToken installed the new game of CrossDowns this May along with several variants, most of them similar to their Grabble counterparts, with both a regular and a large board size. This game is very similar to Grabble, with the following differences:
  • Players can swap wild tiles placed on the board for the actual tiles with the corresponding letter
  • The games uses two different dictionaries than Grabble
  • In addition to the base game, a Large variant exists, which uses a 21x21 board and twice as many tiles, & extra bonus

This May, Mecir added two Inter-Club Challenge Improvements:
  • All challenges are now started as two-game matches
  • You can now view the history of all your completed inter-club challenges on your club page
We are currently working on several more club improvements. If you wish to add your input, please take part in the discussion on the Club Presidents DB. We want to hear your ideas!

I am pleased to announce a once in a lifetime experience for anyone interested in developing a game from the ground up. Join { Club } and start adding your input today!

GoldToken added two exciting new discussion boards this month:
Be sure to subscribe to these fun new boards by checking the subscription box in the upper right hand corner.

Regarding GoldToken's Club of the Year - Don't forget to vote on the board! I understand there are some that feel this is a popularity contest, but I humbly disagree. Yes, anyone who undertakes the running of a club is undertaking a full time job. It takes tenacity and innovation to manage a good club and any club owner who vests themselves in their club deserves our full support and admiration. However, this certainly isn't a good enough reason to not recognize the efforts of the best of the best. To think it is just about who has the largest membership or who has the most club members to vote for you is simply folly. It's like a politician who depends on his city to put him into the governors office. If depending on the city of origin alone, it will not happen. Each club is like a little a city. Each one interacts amongst each of the other clubs globally in one manor or another. Players do not only play within a single club. Players who claim otherwise are concentrating on their own concern without regard for those who rightfully are nomonated and earn this award, thus penuriously taking away from the pride these players should feel. Perhaps it helps to remember that popularity is not only inclusive to your clubs. On GoldToken you play a wide range of players and thus are introduced to many clubs, their members and see the club banners on your game sheets. This isn't just your club voting for "you" because it isn't for you, but the entire site of GoldToken voting for your club as a whole.

Certainly, there's a strong argument to be made that GoldToken shouldn't select the Club of the Year based on the 'wisdom of the crowd'. But again, it's the "crowd" that plays here and has intimate knowledge of what is behind each club, the club owner and that has played with players of each club and has gotten to know them intimately. Out of 334 clubs only 28 were even nominated. This contest also promotes the clubs that made the list, giving the joining of clubs more purpose. Plus, we plan to run this contest each year (this is certainly not the first Club of the Year Contest!), prompting clubs to be outstanding in their efforts to at least make the list. Thus, in my opinion, GoldToken's "Club of the Year" contest simply isn't a popularity contest. It's about the club that has had the biggest impact on players and GoldToken over the past year, what being a member of a team is all about and your club making a difference.

Warmly yours in Gaming,

--Badger

Player Appreciation

A quiet, humble player, Man of Steel has been a strong supporter of our beloved site almost since the creation of GoldToken. He has a kind word for everyone and is as true a friend as they come. Stuart has played in every single Olympics, been an active member of many clubs through the years and is one of the leaders in advancing the game of chess on GoldToken. With over 12610 finished games total, you can count him among the seasoned. Send Stuart a game invite or a kind word of appreciation. Or, if planning a trip to Edinburgh, arrange to meet him for a meal of his favorite dish, Hagus. Truly a class act!

Game Of The Month

June's game of the month is Muggins! Join us in a fun Double Elimination Tournament by signing up today for The June 2011 Game of the Month - Muggins! Tournament! Have fun

Muggins (also known as Five Up, Doer Di, American Dominoes and All Fives, depending on the mumber of spinners. Muggins is the game without spinners), is a domino game played with tiles, often referred to as "Bones", with a set of numbers on each end. The object is to gain points during play by making the points at both ends of the domino chain equal to a multiple of 5 and by being the first to play all bones in hand. The winner is the player who, at the end of a round, has at least 100 points and has more points than any other player. The highest score in one play is 20 points, which is obtained by having the [6-6] tile on one end and the [4-4] tile on the other. However, you will find that when the [6-6] is exposed, you can often get 15 points by setting a tile that makes the other end a 3.

While many feel the game is simply one of chance, subtle tactics and powerful positional maneuvering by developing your tiles makes the game one of strategy. To effectively win at any Domino game, players must determine whether or not the tile they have chosen will result in a scoring count once played for themselves or their opponents. If you can, play a tile worth ten points (5-5 or 4-6) on the first move to score early. Otherwise, play a double that gives you control of the arms of the layout. In Dominos, maintaining the initiative is a key concept in winning the game. You keep the initiative by scoring points. When you score there are very few tiles that your opponent can have that will allow them to rescore immediately. This means that more often than not, your opponent will be forced to play a miss and allow you another shot at scoring on your next play.

Remember these few tips to play your best game: For every Double played to the board, there is at least one standard tile that can be hooked to it that either maintains the current count or increases/decreases it by multiples of five. The smaller the total you leave to your opponent, the smaller the total they can make from it. When another player draws a tile, you have information as to what was missing in his hand. If he draws one tile and plays it, you know that if you can force the layout to end in the values he was missing, you will force him to draw more tiles.

We hope you enjoy it!

Up front & personal
Interview by: laura lee

This month we interviewed TN-T
**~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~**

1. What brought me to GT?
I played with pepperbeach on another site, and couldn't figure out where she'd gone. She invited me to GT, and paid for my first membership. I thank God for her that she brought me here and it's been 6 years since. I knew Night_Eagle also, but he's disappeared from sight unfortunately.

2. How did I choose my name for GT?
I don't know the previous name I used when I first came here, but when I moved to Tennessee, I wanted something to do with the initials TN. Well, my friend Heyred, told me I had a dynamic personality, and I should add -T to it, so hence the TN-T.

3. What interests you most on GT?
The interaction with all my people that I play with. I love chatting with them and getting to know them. Quite a few of them are good friends, and I've met several of them that live here in the Tennessee area. I love all the games, and tournaments that go on. I don't win too many of them, but I still enjoy a good game, no matter whether I win or lose. The management here is wonderful, and Badger is the best. She has made a great family site, where people don't cuss you out, or fight with you, and when I'm in a bind, they give me advice.

3a. What about clubs?
I belong to a lot of great clubs, which I play a lot of tournaments through, besides the site-wide tournaments. I could take up this whole page with all my clubs, but I guess I've been with The Monkeytyper's Gaming Paradise Club the longest. monkeytyper is a great owner and does some wonderful work there in her club. I have a few chat only clubs, like The Kitties Korner & Doggie Daycare Club, which I enjoy, but we have a few games in there also.

4. What State or County do I live in and city or country?
I live outside Nashville, Tennessee, USA on the outskirts. I live in an apartment building on the 11th floor on the corner apartment and I can look right into Nashville. Quite a sight, and anytime the football team puts off fireworks, I have a front row seat.

What in your State or Country do you think tourist should definitely see?
I think there's a lot of history in Nashville and the surrounding areas that tourists would love to see, like war memorials. There's great zoos, a riverboat that goes down called the General Jackson, and of course, the Grand Ole Opry. When people come to Nashville, they can fill their days with shopping, sightseeing and a major university Vanderbilt for people that need medical care.

5. What hobbies do I have and other interests?
I love going to activities that are planned within my community. I try to get over to the nursing home and volunteer with bingo, and/or seeing people that don't have anybody to see them. I love to do cross stitch, dab a little bit in jewelry making (not very good at it), but want to get into digital scrapbooking to do something with my family pictures (that you can see in my picture album).

6. Children, grandchildren?
No children or grandchildren, but my brother has four wonderful nieces and nephew that they gave me. I love being called "Aunt Beth" and I miss them dearly, they are still in South Florida, where I originally came from. None of my relatives play here on GT, I'm the only one.

7. Do you work, what kind of work did you do?
No, at present I'm on disability due to multiple health problems, I guess my biggest health problem is my heart, which just about killed me January 2010, but thanks to Vanderbilt, I'm still kicking. I did work for the State of Florida, Department of Children & Families, in the child abuse department which was a very stressful job. I worked for them for over 25 years.

8. Any pets?
At present, I have 9 tropical fish. I want to acquire another cat, which I miss cuddling with when I sleep. My other had to be given away when I was in the hospital for a month back in January 2010, and I miss him terribly, so I need another fur-baby to take his place.

Hugging Beth (TN-T)

**~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~**

We would like to say Thank you to TN-T for letting us step into her personal life for a bit.

If there are any questions you would like to see asked in future interviews, please let us know.

Testimonial Of The Month
Brought to you by: *GoldToken* Players

I have been a member of GT since 2001. I learned about GT from Nisqually. He and I met in a News Group many, many, many years ago and he's always been there for me to talk to....Bless his heart.
I love GT...I've been to other Game sites but, they just don't compare to GT. There's always a game going and I love the Tournament games. I've made a lot of friends in here, some go way back....am I telling my age yet? hahaha!
I love to play Back & Nackgammon, Salvo, Grabble and a little bit of DiceDots & Halma.
I just retired recently so I'm in here a lot more which is great!
Well, I guess that's it for now...anybody who wants to play just send me an invite....let the games begin!!!!!

MsDot

I joined a little more than 6 yrs ago, I don't remember how I found this site . When you hit 50 you forget things. I've played
on couple other sites but graphics and wide variety of game choices didn't measure up to GoldToken. I started as a guest and have been a Platinum or Gold Member ever since. My game choices are (with variants) Grabble , Salvo , Dice games, and Dominos, I do try others from time to time. Badger is the best , with a heart of Gold, she has made this site a very fun and family friendly place to meet new friends and visit with old ones. This site is my sanctuary to, get away from the real world and yes I am a GoldTokenholic, here every day playing into the wee hours of the night. Every chance I get I suggest GoldToken to folks. Just want to say GoldToken Staff keep up the good work and great ideas.

April's Poetry Contest winner is RubyJoy who won 10 Golderos for her lovely poem:

Loss and Faith

There's a loss in life
That none can explain
A loss so profound
All else seems inane.

A loss of one's self
A loss of one's soul
Most people would crack
And lose self control

How can you lose
The very essence of you
Without even knowing
Without even a clue?

A lack of the essence
And so little faith
When all you become
Is merely a wraith

With so little faith
With so little hope
There's no one to help
And throw you a rope

A faith in yourself
To rise above all
To believe you are real
And hear the last call

A call that will come
From a place deep within
Listen closely to hear
To find the yang to your yin.

To Arlene, a true friend and inspiration.

Impressions of Goldtoken Newbie
By * Serene Selene*

So here I am, six weeks on, and I’ve pretty much abandoned real-time Internet gaming...the two other turn-based sites I used to inhabit have not seen a log-in by me for about a week. As impressed as I was when I first checked this place out on a fellow gamer’s recommendation, I can tell you this: after taking root, Goldtoken.com grows on you, so watch out!

There are some fairly obvious differences between GoldToken and other turn-based sites:

For one: None of the other turn-based sites that I’m familiar with have any capacity for gaming between more than two opponents. I’ve been playing Chinese Checkers (another uniquely GoldToken game) with all six corners controlled by different players! Makes it look more like crowded Chinese Checkers, and creates an entirely different game compared to those with fewer numbers of players...5, 4, 3 and the traditional 2 player option(s) have the same effect as variants: they all induce different conditions and therefore produce - however subtle - a different kind of game.

For another: GoldToken is the only site with flexibility in how time-outs are handled. Commonly, a time-out by one player means the other player automatically wins - no ifs, buts or maybes. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve forfeited a game simply because I lost track of time, had to meet a deadline at work or devote time away from the computer fulfilling an obligation. Here at GoldToken you too can choose the hatchet option, but there is also an alternative: loss of turn. A good game need not be ruined by an unexpected interruption; indeed, many of the games’ rules include a facility for the other player to “pass back” their turn without penalty if the first player loses a turn because of time-out. A great idea that makes Goldtoken.com special.

Another great idea: GoldToken's clubs.
When I first joined I thought I was impressed with the number and variety of games (and their variants) on this site. I didn’t realize what I was in for when I started exploring and then joining the clubs here at GoldToken. They’re absolutely amazing! Everything from language classes, recipes and hobbies to pets and lifestyle choices and back to just plain old shared gaming interests - I know it’s a cliché, but there really is something for everyone. It’s already becoming a habit to start my day with a chuckle care of the Daily Laugh club; I’m learning how to play several new games at The learning club including CrossDowns, Domination and Senet;; picked out a beautiful faerie icon to appear next to my name (free of charge) thanks to the Fairy Tales club; introduced my two pooches to my fellow members at the Dawg Luvers 2 club; tested my knowledge on the Classic Trivia board at the Classic TV and Music club, and played two of my favorite board games to my hearts content at the Lions of Action and the Chess4Fun clubs. The clubs really do add a whole new level to the experience of gaming and my enjoyment of it.

Whether it’s a few minutes worth of game moves or hours of immersion, I’ve got everything I could want and more right here at Goldtoken.com!

The Magnum Opus - GoldToken's Game Creation Club has been opened for players to work together to design one new GoldToken game from the ground up. The club is open to everyone and all are welcome to take part. Just what kind of game this is going to be is yet unknown, but I am sure that it won't be long before players come up with the basics and start designing graphics. GoldToken will code what ever game the club comes up with. This is really a special opportunity for everyone to add their input into something really unique and wonderful. If successful, we will do another! So come and put your ideas in and see what develops.

*The Prime Time TV Club*
Come by and see their Spotlight of the week--->The Prime Time TV Club. So far there has been 33 members spotlighted.
Prime Time also has a cooking corner. They have parties and play games for a chance to win a cook book from different places and for different occasions. Their latest winner was Kitten_Tx who won the State Fair of Texas cookbook, had all the prize winning recipes in it, it was from 1985, back when comfort food was just that. Way to go!!

*[ Budgie's Tourney's ]*
If it's only games and BINGO go see Budgie. He has two types of Bingo games. One is based on looking for words in a grid, each player has a choice of 2 boxes, they are used thro-out the games, their boxes have a set of numbers inside, He will call out 10 numbers each evening, whereas example there are looking for Garden Centre the numbers given hopefully will match a number in their chosen box, they then hopefully get that the number to also correspond to the letter on the grid on the main page, there are six games in total, at the end of the six games he will have six winners, He then runs what he calls the Blackout game which he will then call out 10 numbers each evening until a player can cross out all the numbers on their card, that person wins.....
The other bingo game is based on how the original bingo games which are played in any bingo hall, He have a full set of Bingo Cards there with him, the cards he has are broken up into sets 1--14 ..He then runs three games, Each player that signs up chooses a card number 1=14 for each of the three games, at this time he will run the game as before sending out 10 numbers each evening except Sat. and Sunday.
If you take a look at [ Budgie's Original Bingo Two ] you can see how the game itself looks, game one has been completed and at the moment the players are trying to cross out all the numbers on their card as a player crossed out a line. It may sound complicated but it's easy to follow and guaranteed to be lot of fun when you holler BINGO!

*{ Club }*
This is one of three clubs owned by MM David littlefair XI. He is working on membership as they are all new clubs.
