Posted by Jools on 16 May 2022 at 12:30PM Eight men are traveling by ship, with the ship's cat. A storm at sea causes a shipwreck. The men and the cat swim cling to some barrels and swim to nearby island. On arriving at the island they find the barrels contain fishing tackle. There also are four boats on the island, each large enough to accommodate two men and the cat. The men spend the rest of the day fishing, they place the fish caught in a pile at the centre of the island. At 1 in the morning, two of the men gets up, and walk over to the pile of fish. They divides the fish into four equal piles, plus 2 for the cat. They loads one pile of fish into a boat, arranges the remaining fish to form a single pile, and leave the island in a boat. At 2 in the morning, two of the men gets up, and walk over to the pile of fish. They divides the fish into four equal piles, plus 2 for the cat. They loads one pile of fish into a boat, arranges the remaining fish to form a single pile, and leave the island in a boat. At 3 in the morning, two of the men gets up, and walk over to the pile of fish. They divides the fish into four equal piles, plus 2 for the cat. They loads one pile of fish into a boat, arranges the remaining fish to form a single pile, and leave the island in a boat. At 9 in the morning, the last 2 men get up. As there now are a lot fewer fish in the pile, and three of the boats are missing, they have a clear idea of what happened during the night. After each having 2 fish for breakfast and 2 for the cat, they loads the remaining fish into the fourth boat and leave the island together. What is the smallest number of fish there could have been in the pile initially, so that each of the 8 men gets some fish, as does the cat? Each man of a pair have equal fish.
