I must be missing something. If we just consider the 3am event, let:

x = the number in the pile
y = the number in each pile after dividing them up

Thus:

5y + 1 = x

After he takes a pile, there are z remaining:

z = x - y

Because of the 9am event, z must be an even number.

We can eliminate x by substituting 5y + 1 for x in the second equation:

z = 5y + 1 - y

Simplifying:

z = 5y - y + 1
z = y (5 - 1) + 1
z = 4y + 1

If z is even, I don't see how y can be a whole number. 4y can never be an odd number, can it?
