Winter times with Ole Blue!!
With the bad winter we are having right now, I thought of this time in my life.

One day it snowed pretty deep in Woodward, Oklahoma. We had a chainlink fence that was in the backyard separating our backyard and the next door neightbor's. We had a toy collie and dont recall what kind of dog was next door. The snow drifted up over the chainlink fence and the dog next door walked up the snow and into our back yard so had some fun playing with our collie.

Blue was the leader of the horses when it came time to be fed. That day, the pack of horses came in but without Blue. There was an area, that was hilly and deep and it snowed so much Ole Blue fell in a snow drift, she worked to get out she had developed a thin area of ice on her back from struggling and sweating, she was very tired. The couple that had that pasture took a halter, rope, and a whip.
They put the halter on Blue and the other person whipped her, she got so mad she started struggling again and got out and followed the couple home. I knew something was wrong, I just didnt know what. The couple who we had known for six years told us this story. My precious Blue was ok.

Well back to games. Try to write some more when I can.

Re: Winter times with Ole Blue!!
Glad that Blue was Ok. What a scary situation. I like imagining the 2 dogs playing together in the snow. How clever for the neighbor's dog to climb up the snowdrift and over your fence. Though it's amazing to think of the snow being that high!

Rodeo Time!!
I was thinking back and remembered this event!!

One time the Rodeo came to town. So I decided to ride in it. Mother and daddy, but mostly my mama drove me out to the pasture to ride my horse. I still had several years before I could drive. Mother and I drove out to the pasture and got Ole Blue, we got her saddled and off to town I went. We lived fairly close to this pasture. It was a fairly large pasture and had several horses in it. My father had found it and we rented there for several years.

Back to the story, well my recollection, I ramble but lets get on with this time. We lived in a house that was close to the FFA Barn, we had a fenced in backyard, so I could keep my horse at my house during the day and while the rodeo was in town, at the FFA barn which had a small pasture at night. I rode to the Rodeo and rode in the Rodeo Grand Entry, that was one of the highlites of my life. All I did was follow the horse in front of me, around the small grandstand, then I went and stood next to my horse. Well, unsuspecting me, found out that my horse could get a little surprised. I don't remember why but there was a band and when someone played the drum, it surprised Ole Blue, she moved her foot on top of my foot and froze, she wouldn't move her foot, I stood there pushing on her and finally she got off my foot. Whew!! Boy was I glad!! That smarted!! Then when the rodeo was over that week, I decided it was time to take Ole Blue back to the pasture with all her horse friends. I was riding and mom was following me in her car watching. The highway at the time went through this town. I came to the highway and needed to cross it, so looked both ways but I knew I could get across even though I saw a semi tractor coming, mom saw that I wasn't going to stop so she drove her car in the middle of the highway and stopped and waited till I got a cross, she was going to be hit before me, but I knew Blue was going to get across. The semi tractor driver saw what was going on and stopped his truck. He probably had grandchildren that rode horses too and knew what I was thinking, grownups know a lot more than kids give them credit.

Mom was here yesterday and she had forgotten some of this memory, so it has helped me writing my childhood memories.

Re: Rodeo Time!!
Hi Lisa! I appreciate you sharing your memories with usHugging! Memories are precious! I see you have taken a break will you be starting back up anytime soon? So Blue we have heard about, what happened with Whiskers and Starlight? My memory is not great these days as well, so I should start writing down memories myself, not starting a blog but personal notes so I can go back and remember whenever I forget. Thank you again for sharing and trusting us to be apart of those memories!

Yes Hillbilly, he was a special man, but as I got older, I found out, the reason was mainly to keep me occupied, he didn't want me to stay on the phone with boys, when he needed it available for when the rig needed to contact my dad.

Re: Rodeo Time!!
Rodeo time is always a great time to ride your horse into town, but you had to be careful due to all those big trucks. I'm sure it was pretty intense to have ole Blues hoof on your foot for a while. she was probably frightened by the drums and all the commotion going on at the Rodeo. I'm sure she got better as the years progressed. Did you ever enter in any of the contests at the Rodeo?

Re: Rodeo Time!!
Great memories. Make sure you print them or save them somewhere other than here. It’s great to share them with your friends here but a family and it’s history should be kept somewhere more permanent than on the internet. That’s my opinion.

Early times with Ole Blue!
My parents never knew how old Blue was, maybe that is why she was so gentle or maybe she was just a good horse. In my eyes, she was the best. I had her about 20 years, so I don't know how old she was when we sold her, I knew I would not be able to handle the loss of her dying, me going out to the pasture one day and her lying on the ground, so I sold her before that time came.

But back to the story. I had just got Ole Blue. Was so happy and proud. My friend next door, had just got a horse too and we decided to go horseback riding. I guess I thought it came natural, well it must of been my mother that took me to the pasture since daddy was off in the oilfields and I hardly ever saw him. My friend rode her horse up to the pasture where I had Blue and Blue did her fancy footwork, circling me, scaring me to death, so unfortunately I had to tell my friend that I was too scared to ride Blue so my friend rode her horse back to town. The town we lived in was Woodward, Oklahoma. Now I took off the saddle, brushed down the horse and fed her and watered her and went home. When I got home, I found out that my friends horse got spooked on the ride back and the girl fell off, she got back on and finished the ride, she didn't get scared like I did. Well I was so mad at myself for causing my friend to get hurt all because I was too afraid to get on my horse. So I went back out to where my horse was, and got on her and rode, I wasn't going to let the fancy footwork that Blue did scare me anymore!!

The end for now!!

Re: Early times with Ole Blue!
Hi, thanks again your stories are great! I hope you know that your friend falling off her horse was not your fault at all, it would happen whether you were there or not, we can't control what is to be, but we can see from this story how loving and caring you were as a child. You loved horses and your friend, and also you got over your fear, well done!

My wish that came true.
When I was a little girl, all I asked my daddy was for a horse. He worked in the oilfields and drove out in the country a lot. One day in his many days of driving, he saw a Blue Roan Mare that was in the middle of a pasture with a bunch of kids crawling all over it. I was told there was no adult around and that since he didn't hardly know anything about horses, he thought that horse looked gentle enough for his little girl. He went to the farmer at the house and asked about the horse, the farmer sold it to daddy and daddy rented a trailer and took it home. Well we had no where to put it, but my daddy knew a man that had a very little bit of land, a man that worked in the oilfields with him and the horse was put there. Next came getting feed, a bucket to put feed in, a brush to brush the horse, we called her Blue since that was the name the farmer had called her. We got all the necessities that the feed store and tack that we were told was needed. Now my daddy was very good at going to pawn shops and one day found a saddle that was real narrow in the seat and would hold a child in securely. Oh Old Blue would just look at us, probably thinking that we were a bunch of strange people. Oh gosh she would never hurt a fly. I tried to get on her and that horse was gentle but smart. She walked around me in circles, scared the daylights out of me, she had big feet, but that horse tiptoed, she knew she had me baffled. So I just fed her the first day and brushed her.

This will be long writings, I will write as I have the time and can remember them. Since my daddy died from Alzheimer's and his mother was senile, back in those days, now it might of been dementia. I feel its important to write. Never know.

Bye for now!!

Life of my childhood.
One of my earliest memories was in Odessa, Texas. My girlfriend and I were playing Chicken. We would run out to the curb and back to the house. We would do that when we saw a car coming. We thought it was fun but adults thought it was scary. I loved my daddy with my heart and soul. I just adored him. One day he came home from the oilfields and I didn't know and he saw what my friend and I were doing, he was so scared, he didn't say anything, stood behind the front door, as I walked in he gave me the biggest swat on the rear end. I new he was upset with me and I never wanted to upset my daddy. I am Crying writing this, I miss him so much!! He is no longer with us on Earth, hes in a better place now!!

Me
I am going to write, a lot about my childhood, as time permits, I try to get my games played and duties at clubs here done as well. So I might not be on for days writing. Just playing and duties.

I guess one of my first memories was back in Odessa, Texas. I was in grade school. My girlfriend across the street and I decided one day to play chicken. We would run to the street and then run back, well cars would come and to us girls it was fun to out run the cars, well to an adult it was scary to see what we were doing. I love my daddy but he was gone so much, I just adored him and when he came home he got a BIG Hug!! He came in the back of the house and saw what we were doing out front, he didn't say a word, when I walked through the front door, not knowing he was home from the oilfields, he gave me the biggest swat on my rearend. I knew then never to do that again and never make my daddy upset at me. I Crying writing this, because he is no longer with us on Earth! Hes at a better place but I miss my daddy!! Goodbye for now!!

Bittersweet
I am happy to hear that you will be writing about your childhood. We feel better talking about those things that we wish be it good or bad.

It's funny how when we were children that we all were innocent and had no fears and no worries, but parents know best since they lived more than us. I know that your dad loved you, and never wanted anything to happen to you. I am sorry that your dad is gone, but his memory was never forgotten.
