Album Photo New mosaic, 25th February, 2017. This isn't the usual tiles, most of it, including the sun, is in glass, the same as the large frame in black. I also put a wooden frame, also in black, around it. All told, it's 12 inches by 34 inches. The grey though is plastic, same size, but triangle. Actually, they are swizzle sticks, i.e. from some cocktails, from when my wife and I had a very good cruise to the Caribbean via Panama Canal when we visited Miami.

IT IS LOVELY THAT GOLDTOKEN PUT IT ON MY GAMESHEET.Posted at 24 Feb 2017 at 2:57PM by PEACH WINE Re: This one is glass, so looks a bit like a stained glass window. But as I used grout instead, on 1/4 inch ply, it is, at least for me, a portrait, so by our doorway. I could have used a glass as in a church, but it would then be different entirely, and leaded, not plywood.

Posted at 25 Feb 2017 at 6:40AM by Churchgoer Re: Just a hobby, I only tried this about 5 years ago. No point in selling them here in Cyprus, although they have mosaics in the museum going back about 3,000 years, it's not worth it. If you even suggest a price, it's "HOW MUCH - I could by a manufactured one that's far less expensive!" Yes, of course you can, if you want a mass produced one.
Posted at 25 Feb 2017 at 7:35AM by Dionysos Re: New Mosaic Yes, agreed! It would have to be at an art show where people realize its value Posted at 26 Feb 2017 at 1:07AM by Churchgoer Re: But almost everyone CAN do it, if they tried, the art school that I go to, Turtle and Moon, granted it's in Cyprus where there are a lot of 3,000 or more years old mosaics, there is, to learn, a mosaic kit containing tiles, already broken if you like, a plywood base, glue and grout. Handy if you are a beginner, but everyone in the school, from someone who is just starting to "experts" can help anyone. It's just 5 euros (at the moment, USA dollars and euros are almost the same), and that includes about 3 teas, or coffees or whatever, obviously non alcohol, and cakes - which the members, like my wife and I, contribute as and when. Posted at 27 Feb 2017 at 8:43AM by Dionysos Re: New Mosaic That's so awesome! Yes, I agree that anyone 'can' do it, but you took the time and DID do it! Kudos to you! That school sounds like a lot of fun!
Posted at 27 Feb 2017 at 5:38PM by Churchgoer Re: The "school" is a fun thing, rather than some serious mosaics and paintings, but Lise, the artist there, went to Bristol University, England, and has a degree in art in general. Irene's paintings - my wife that is, are also on this page. She "cannot draw", so for about 74 years, she hasn't painted for about 60 years, ie when she was about 13. But a friend of mine, a man, said to her "Forget what they told you at school, I will teach you to at least draw in about 6 weeks." So he did, look at the paintings now, especially the black and white house, which was ours for 6 years, in Wainstalls, Yorkshire. That was her second painting, the flower is her third, and I will give the Japanese Mandarin ducks, that was her first painting. Before that she was drawing, with Gary, my friend, some rough shading, to see what can be done. How's that for "cannot draw"?! She still takes her time, and doesn't rush. Posted at 28 Feb 2017 at 10:06PM by Churchgoer Re: But if "everyone could do it", there would be no need for talent. Everyone can play soccer, but not at the level of Pele. And you, my friend, are very talented. This is a lovely work, it has an Art Deco feel, too. I like the colors & how you repeat the blue at both ends. The idea of working swizzle sticks into it, as a reminder of your trip was very clever, too.
