GoldToken's Monthly News

Together We Make a Difference

My GoldToken anniversary came and went so fast (June 2nd), I had forgotten it was my anniversary! It has been a wonderful 8 years sitting in the hot seat of GoldToken. I wish to thank all those who have been so supportive and helpful. Your memberships have kept this little game site functioning at it's best. Without you, GoldToken would not be the incredible site it is today. Perhaps that is what so many of you don't realise. GoldToken is supported by your memberships. I cannot say this loud enough: We would not be here if it were not for your generous support. Thank you Group hug

Our Goold'en Winner Is

Congratulations to Jools who was the first to discover this Goold on GoldToken page headers:

As per last months newsletter: In celebration (of my wedding), the first player who sees (hidden somewhere on GoldToken where everyone can see it but not in my personal profile, photo albums or blog) and then correctly sends me the location of a special notice of this fact will win a one month extension of their membership (if guest, a free two month Silver!). Hint: In plain view!

Inter-Club Ladders!
GoldToken's newest feature - These are similar to regular ladders, but instead of individual players participating, club teams do, and instead of single games, an inter-club challenge is created for each match. The club that wins the challenge advances to the next rung.
Club presidents can sign up their club to inter-club ladders in the club settings, as long as the club teams have at least five members participating. The list of inter-club ladders can be accessed from the Tournaments page, just like the regular ladders.

Special Thanks written on a blackboard to Mecir for putting this awesome feature together for us!!

New Jiggles

For those who like to be Grammatically as well as Dramatically Correct, we have now added more punch with punctuation to the Jiggle_Word *Family*
In addition to the already existing ampersand *&; parenthesis (hi_there); plus and minus signs +and-; and asterisk **; we have now added a question mark *?; exclamation point !*; comma ,; colon*:; semi-colon ;*; apostrophe '; quotation marks *"; and for finality, a period .*!
For those of you new to Jiggle_Word you can go to the FAQ page at Jiggle words - How to create them for the full explanation of how to create these bouncing babies!
You may study there to your heart's content, but remember, there will NOT be a test !

The new Jiggle letters have been brought to you by marcmandy, be sure to thank him for his traditionally awesome work!

Game Of The Month

July's game of the month is Hangman! Join us in a fun Double Elimination Tournament by signing up today for The July 2012 Game of the Month - Hangman! Tournament! Have fun

A tip for immediate feedback on the correctness or incorrectness of your guess.

Due to the nature of the beast, we were unable to program an immediate screen displaying the accuracy of your guess, but there is a straightforward work-around.

Immediately after you submit your move, hit the Back arrow on your browser. I believe the Windows keyboard shortcut for that is CTRL + [ {open bracket]. That will return you to the page you just left. (Mac users use the Command button instead of CTRL)

Then hit the Refresh button on the browser, or CTRL + R. That will refresh the page and show you where the letter you just guessed appears or give the poor li'l guy another addition to his body.

What I do at that point is, if I see the next letter I want to guess, or have an epiphany as to the solution, I write a note to myself in the yellow Game Notes box and then hit the Update Notes button to the right of the box and I'm ready to hit the Gamesheet button or the GT Logo at the top of the page or Ctrl + ] and return to my game playing.

An alternative to that if you are playing a lot of Hangman games is to go into Preferences and click on General. At the top of that page, the first option presented is After I make a move in a game: If you choose Show me the move and then hit Apply and Finish at the bottom of the page, you will find that after you Save the Move you will return to the game and it will show you if you made a correct or incorrect choice. Beware of the downside though, that this will now happen with every game you play unless you click on "Save and go to Gamesheet" or "Save and go to next similar game".

We hope you enjoy it!

Special Thanks written on a blackboard to *marcmandy* for writing this month's Game of the Month Nugget. You too, can write a knock-out Nugget and reap the rewards! If your Nugget is chosen as the winner for GoldToken's Game of the Month in GoldToken's Monthly Newsletter, you will win:
  • Silver, Gold, and Platinum Members: a one month extension to your current membership
  • Wood Members: a free membership upgrade
  • Guests: a free two-month Silver Membership
So, what are you waiting for? Start writing! .

Best Recipe Contest

June's winner is: Grilled Potatoes and Onions

Yummy Potatoes and Onions for the grill

Needed: 2 alum. Pie pans
Potatoes, slices very thin (I usually use about one med. potato per person)
Onions, sliced very thin
Butter
Salt and pepper to taste

Butter inside of both alum pans before starting to put this together. In one of the pans layer the potatoes then onions, add dollop of butter and a bit of the seasonings. Continue making layers until the pan is full. Put other pan on top of the first one and using a strip of alum. foil, seal the edges of the two pans. Place on grill and turn frequently and continue grilling for a total of about 20-30 min.

One pan full will serve 2-3 people. Easy and simple, but oh so yummy!!!

Testimonial Of The Month
Brought to you by: *GoldToken* Players

My name is Adam, I go by the nickname KINGSLAYER and many goldtoken players know me . I was the first beta-tester this site had and founder of its first club The Chess4Fun Club (Editors note: Club #1!). Back when Chad and Taylor decided to try to create this site so we could move here from itsyourturn.com I thought it was too big a task. I was VERY wrong. In this day and age of social networking, Goldtoken stands out as a place where many feel at HOME. I know this feeling only too well. After three years I had too many personal things going on and then two of my closest friends Ishkabibble & Kingpin1 passed away. I left goldtoken and lost contact with many of my closest friends. Friends, might I add that I never met in person... Chess4fun was abandoned but two club members refused to let it die. Triple D and then quietman. I can not thank them enough for preserving the legacy that is club gaming. I returned to goldtoken 1 year ago first as a guest then as a member in good standing once again. Badger has done an amazing job since Chad's departure. I recently received a letter from Taylor who was about 12 years old when Goldtoken was born. The letter brought tears to my eyes and reminded me that no matter what life dishes out Goldtoken is a home that never forgets its members.
Thank you all for the best site on my long favorites list!
KINGSLAYER

Contest of the Month

July's contest of the month is: Best Blog Contest

A blog (according to Wikipedia) is a website where entries are written in chronological order and commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.
Many blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject such as food, politics, or local news; others function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic.

If you decide to enter the world of blogging, you should decide what kind of blog you want your blog to be. What do you want to write about? Are you going to write about many things or something specific? Decide how often you are going to add entries, every day, once a week, once a month.
Once you have decided what you are going to write about, you need to think about how you are going to write it or enter it into your blog. Be it by text, by pictures, or even external links. A great blog will take advantage of all of the above things, your blog story or viewpoint can be enhanced and made much more enjoyable and interesting to read by the use of pictures and links.

Write about what you are passionate about, write about what you know and make sure you know what you are writing about. For the more serious bloggers, you won't be taken very seriously if your blog is full of grammar and spelling mistakes. So make sure you spellcheck.

No matter your blog content, people will continue to come back to read it as long as you continue to make it interesting.

Winner will receive a GoldToken signature Goldie to sign their blog with, like this Matt Thumbs up

The contest winner will be chosen by poll on the Blog Entries DB. Deadline to enter is July 31st, 2012.

We have a winner for June 2012's Best Short Story contest!

It's hard to believe we have only one player with enough talent to write a short story based on "Best Friends" for our once a year contest, but it was indeed stellar enough to scare off even the best of writers. ;;congrats;; to Blockhead .... You won 5 Golderos! Below is the short story:

It didn't look good, I didn't feel good. I looked up to see Les Whittle's smiling face, a friendly open smile. Only when it was Les's turn to move did his smile dim. ...

Forty years ago I made my first visit to Morpeth chess club - two weeks before my first game with Les. I had convincingly beaten four club match players. Someone said, "You should play Les, Les Whittle, he's the club champion. Before I could protest someone said, "I'll see Les and sort something out".

The following week I met Les Whittle and his warm welcoming smile for the first time. Hand shakes and preliminaries done we sat down facing each other. I looked at Les and the chess board. I thought, 'I can't loose this game.'

The game started in conventional fashion, I was white, Les black. He played a masterful game with all his pieces arranged in ideal positions, both his bishops slashing diagonally across the board directly into my kings position, and most impressive of all - his queen, poised, glaring at my puny king side pawns. Perfect symmetry, lines of force, points of power - a savage relentless beauty, all gathering up in unison to storm, and kill my king. Les sacrificed a knight in a mating attack.

As I was released from my misery, Omar Khayyam came to mind:

'Tis all a Chequer-board of Nights and Days
Where Destiny with Men for Pieces plays:
Hither and thither moves, and mates, and slays
And one by one back in the Closet lays.'

Les and I became good chess mates, good friends, best friends.
I eventually wrested the club championship from Les. He smiled as graciously in defeat as in victory.
I recently visited Les at his home in Morpeth.
Les answered the door.
"Hello Les, how are you?"
After a slight pause his courtesy half smile quickly broadened; "Come in, good to see you Peter - what brings you all this way?"
"I was sight-seeing hereabouts and thought I'd drop in to see you."
"Glad you did. I'll be heading off soon for a club match. Look, come along - your bound to see some familiar faces.".
While Les was out of the room, sorting out his brief case, I browsed around and happened on a large photograph album; flicking through it I saw a beaming Les, smartly dressed in top hat and tails, holding his MBE at the gates of Buckingham palace.

A few minutes later Les was lugging his brief case to the front door and, grabbing a long white cane cane from the hat-stand, he grinned as he quipped, "Forget the carrot, just give'em the stick!".

Outside, he pointed the cane down at the pavement - a divining rod probing his path, seeking safe passage.

We, Les Whittle MBE and I, made our way to Morpeth chess club, chattering our song of friendship to the steady rhythmic taping of wood on stone.
