Chess! Join us in a fun Double Elimination Tournament by signing up today for
The August 2011 Game of the Month - Chess Tournament!
Helpful chess maxims
When I first began playing chess I'd seek out those players (and later authors) with chessic wisdom, those who could encapsulate quality ideas in just a sentence.
At the time I found this far more valuable than detailed game annotation which had to be worked through, often without grasping the essentials of the 'why' and 'how'. I wanted to understand the very foundations of the 'why' and 'how'.
Pragmatic chess maxims, such as those I will be quoting, can help with general thinking; and general thinking (time, space, material etc) is what most serious chess players start with, no matter the position. [See General Thinking in 'The Chess Mind' by Gerald Abrahams ... a quality chess thesis!]
So I'll try to add a couple of chess maxims here from time to time, and, if necessary, I will acknowledge my primary sources when making my last entry [64].
If they wish, those who want to add their 2 penny-worth can, but I'd ask for some restraint. It would be so easy to, 'wander off track', and I don't think any convoluted discussion (especially those challenging the given maxim!) will benefit the beginner/intermediate player. I think for the most part, those players are looking for clarity, not complexity.
I suggest those who feel strongly about a particular chessic maxim (or all of them!) and want to articulate their concerns to, and with others, should start another chess nugget.
So, after that preamble, I'll begin:
1. Be aggressive, but play soundly. Don't take unnecessary chances.
2. Make sure every move has a purpose.
To be continued ...
We hope you enjoy it!

July's winner is:
Taco Salad
1 lb lean hamburger
1 small can Rotele tomatoes (I prefer mild)
1 bag shredded lettuce
pkg low fat Mexican cheese
non fat sour cream
2T chili seasoning or to taste
8 oz Salsa
1/2 T Cumin or to taste
5-6 green onions
Brown hamburger and onion with cumin and chili seasoning. If lean enough, it doesn't have to be drained. Add rotele and add salsa. When done, put lettuce on four plates, top with cooked hamburger mixture, about a cup each, add about 1/4 c Mexican shredded cheese and a dollop of sour cream. Serve with corn chips and extra salsa if desired. Start to finish, 15 minutes. Versatile, low fat, filling. No heating up of the kitchen.

Interview by: llwgirl |
This month we interviewed
RubyJoy
**~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~**
1. What brought you to GoldToken?
There was a friend on a different turn based game site that lead me to GoldToken. He still plays here but our friendship grew apart.
How'd you choose your name for GT?
Originally my nickname was ArkTrek, for 2 of my favorite things... Noah's Ark and Star Trek. I wasn't thrilled with it and then chose AngelJoy, for the first poem I wrote in my adulthood combined with part of my first name. It has now become RubyJoy because the Ruby is my birthstone.
2. What interests you most on GT?
The friendships and the fact that I can leave at anytime and pick it up later in the same place I left the games.
3. Do you belong to any of the clubs? How about the chat only clubs (birds, kitties, garden, religion)?
I belong to 2 writing clubs, The Poetry Garden Club and The Dead Poet's Society Club. I also belong to The Fairy Tales Club and The 80's Breakfast Club. Both of these clubs are great fun both in challenges and fun extra-curricular activities.
4. What State or Country do you reside in?
I have lived in Ohio for the last 38 years
Do you live in the City or Country?
Interesting question. I am from the Canton area, which is city, but for the last year I have lived in the smallest little village that still has all the necessities but it is surrounded by farms. By the time this is published, I will be back in the city.
What in your State or Country do you think tourist should definitely see?
There are so many things in Ohio that are wonderful. Cedar Point, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Football Hall of Fame, Serpents Mound, King's Island, Put-In-Bay.
interviewer note, (I was born and raised in Ohio, been to all these places and can vouch they are all fun)
5. What hobbies to you have?
I am fanatical about movies and do plastic canvas work.
What other interest do you have?
I love learning, board and card games, and travel.
6. Children?
3. Denny (aka Tom) is married with 2 children and works very hard to support them. Kory is studying for his PhD in Economics. Veronica I hoping to become an assistant manager very soon at her store to help support her daughter.
Grandchildren?
Again, 3. My son's, Kayla, 7 and Toby, 2 and 1/2. My daughter's, Torrie, 3.
Do any of them play on GT? Occasionally,
Denny plays chess as Daemiian. My other 2 played in their younger years but not lately.
7. Do you work?
I am currently unemployed and looking for a job.
If so what kind of work do you do?
I have degrees in accounting and CAD. I worked in retail for most of my life and my last job was in digital mapping.
8. Any pets?
I grew up my whole life with dogs and about 20 years ago, started living with cats too. Currently I don't have any but would love to again someday.

We would like to say

to
RubyJoy

Brought to you by: |
I was introduced to this site in November 2003, by a friend that I cannot remember her name. We both were guests and played constantly all the games enjoying them, in fact we were addicted to the site. I had already planned to go to Florida in December and was concerned cause I would miss out on Gold Token. I left for Florida in December and first visited my daughter in Virginia. She had a computer and I would sit all day while they worked and I would play at Gold Token. I was at my daughter's home on Christmas Eve and was playing games on Gold Token with my friend that when we both received a notice from Gold Token. We were both a given free 6 month silver membership and we were surprised. I left Virginia and got to Florida a few days later. Now I thought where can I play gold token and learned that the Library in St. Cloud had computers and all you had to do is get in line. I saw that getting there at 9 am when they opened you could get one of the 12 computers fairly easy but for an hour only. I would be there daily to play for my hour and have the rest of the day for myself. This worked good for my three months in Florida and then back home. There I continued on at Gold Token getting my Gold membership which I have today. I have many Clubs I joined along the way and germ Warfare The Outbreak Club is one of the best. I am enjoying the game of Outbreak, Backgammon, and all the games at GT. Recently I found Chess to be a challenge and helps keep the mine alert. I'll always be a member here and when I say addicted I really truly mean it.
Golden Oldie
I was made aware of GoldToken by a friend. She said she played a lot of games there. I joined GoldToken December 30,2004 and I'm very happy here. Pork Chop Club was the first club I joined. I am an officer in a few clubs and am Hypergammon Club Ladder in The Pork Chop Club glad to be here. I play most games but CHESS is not one of them..I do like backgammon and Hypergammon. I found a lot of friends on here..

| Impressions of a GoldToken Newbie |
Brought to you by *Serene Selene * |
I was offline for more than a month because I didn’t take computer viruses seriously and thus didn’t protect myself with a suitable anti-virus program. Whilst banished I missed the Internet terribly, and one of the reasons was my new found love for this GoldToken site. It was so lovely to log on finally after getting my laptop back from the tech guys. I was delighted to find that even after such a short time on this site I have made friends that remember me enough to let me know that they miss me and enquire as to what happened. Thank you.
I‘m taking my turn at a six player game of Chinese Checkers and getting very frustrated with the lack of openings. I thought I was getting more proficient at the game but until now had never competed against more than one or two opponents. In those games I was always looking for a piece to jump over, a single solid in the void. Suddenly, in the six-player game, there’s so little void and so many pieces in what’s proved to be a limited space that I’m starting to think of it as CROWDED Chinese Checkers. It certainly makes for a different game compared to what I’m used to.
The number of participants in a multi-player game can change the tactics, dynamics and even the entire strategy of a single set of game rules. The same can be said of game variants that are adaptations of an initial set of basic rules. At Goldtoken.com each type of turn-based game has at least one variant.* Some introduce facilities for an increased quantity of adversaries whilst others present a myriad of alternative mutations for the same number of players as in the initial rules. Then again they can do both.
The point is that tweaking a few rules can completely transform a game into something new.
My first experience of this was when I decided to try a twist on chess by entering a Three Checks Chess tournament run by the Chess4Fun Club. I normally play as cautiously as I’m able when it comes to the standard Chess rules, because experience has led me to believe I will have a better chance of winning a game that way.
Applying the same approach to Three Checks Chess proved to be disastrous. The rules had changed the value of pieces, they had become much more expendable in the short term goal of causing check, because checkmate was no longer necessary. Losing a few pieces became much more affordable in the pursuit of victory. It was in effect, as my opponent messaged me after I expressed bewilderment, an entirely different game. It only took one or two games for me to learn to play more aggressively (and then another one or two to actually win after that), but it was a fun new way to look at on old friend. Three Checks Chess has become one of my favorite games on GoldToken since then.
Lines Of Action is a two player game that has several variations for two players as well as a multi-player variant. I’ve already had an interesting and entertaining time exploring each one of them.
How could anyone ever get bored with the amount of game variations presented at GoldToken?
Time to get back to my game of Chinese Checkers and work out my next move before I lose my turn. After that I’m starting a new game of the latest variant that has gotten me excited: Fast Chinese Checkers.
Happy playing!

Augusts' contest is the
Best Nugget submitted throughout the month. All entries will be posted in a poll and announced for voting in next month's newsletter.

Winner will receive two extra months on their current membership, or, if Guest, a two month Silver membership.
Nuggets articles give all the players an opportunity to write various tutorials, strategy guides, and other materials related to playing each of our many games, as well as general information about out various site features. Once approved, the new Nugget article will be added to the appropriate category for all the players to see.
Searching and sorting functionality is also available, allowing you to easily find what you are looking for.
Guest and Wood level players can submit one Nugget per month. Players with a Silver membership or higher can submit as many articles as they want.
Additionally, we are also working on a way for highly successful Guest article writers to obtain site membership as a reward - the details of this will be posted at a later time.
When submitting articles, please be sure to only submit content that you have written yourself, or that you have a permission from its author to post here. Citations and links are obviously fine, as long as they do not lead to inappropriate content.

Nuggets link at the top of your game sheet.

RubyJoy

Filling in the Generation Gaps:
With every passing generation, childhood changes just a little. Although, with the last few generations, there have been some landslide, and landmark, changes.
My parent’s generation dealt with hardships that we can’t understand today. Things like the Great Depression and World Wars. Getting your first television, and not knowing what a rerun was. It was a time when all the neighborhood kids would gather outside to play and when one was called, they all knew their moms would be calling them in next, so they ALL went home. A teenager would get a job sweeping the floor at a store and a nine year old could run errands for a pharmacy. All the money made would be combined in a household fund to ensure the bills were paid. Many children of this time were also dealing with immigrant parents that spoke little English. My parents were no exception.
My generation was caught up with the hippie movement, Vietnam, Kennedy’s assassination, the race to the moon, music and dance changes that were to define the future. Star Trek gave way to scientific changes in the future of mankind. Mothers weren’t home much, they had returned to the workforce to help with the household expenses, so when one child got called home, the rest would just stay and kept playing until they were called one at a time. Nearly every teen girl got a job babysitting because you couldn’t get hired that young to do much else. Most boys could only go out mowing grass and washing cars.
My children’s generation seemed to start a movement indoors. Television started to turn into babysitter for “latch-key” kids. The Nintendo and other games took the place of bicycle riding. It was almost as if there wasn’t anything else to “do”. Some kids, like mine, seemed to be in every activity they could find at school. I've lost track of the number of chess tournaments, football halftime shows, soccer games, tennis matches, track meets, and speech tournaments I attended. Although, it seemed that every return home included whatever was on the television that night or what we could watch on the VHS.
My children’s children will never understand the world without technology invading all aspects of our lives. It is a time when mom calling you home has a whole a new meaning… a cell phone call. The internet brings us closer together and meeting your spouse online becomes the normal thing to do. This is also a time when jobs are so scarce that no one will hire a youngster to mow a lawn let alone sweep a store.
I can’t even begin to imagine that the next generation will bring to life.
First off a big

KINGSLAYER
He was one of the original members of GoldToken and the created the very first club here.
Here is an excerpt from
KINGSLAYER
profile page:
More than a decade ago there were no online turn based games. There was however a realtime chess site where I met the following players. Kingpin1 (deceased) Ishkabibble (deceased) Uncle Art (deceased) Greensong, Kas, & Art Waddell. We noticed that the same people kept coming back and playing at the one site often. We formed the first online chess club and called it Chess4Fun. Records and stats were kept and communication was by email until a man named Patrick Chu opened a site called itsyourturn.com. We then moved there and found that we could play without the realtime complications. Turn based gaming allowed us to have tournaments and ladders but the site was limited in capabilities. It was at that site that 2 brothers from Idaho, Chad & Taylor, joined my club, and they changed everything!!! They built this site based on what we all believed turn based gaming should be and I am proud to have been the first beta tester of this site. I also am EXTREMELY proud to have founded the first club here, The Chess4Fun Club.
The
Prime Time TV Club Welcomes a New President
