The offense is just crushing it right now. And the pitching without Cole has not been dreadful. This looks like a WS team. And they're not going to have to worry about the Astros. This is their year if they're going to ever do it in the Judge era.

Played his worst round ever yesterday. I don't think he can put together four rounds anymore. It's just too much on his body. We'll never know what he could have done still had he not gotten in that car wreck. But most pro athletes retire long before they're Tiger's age. There's no shame to say hey I can't do it anymore. He just got the record for most consecutive cuts made at the Masters. That's not a bad note to go out on.

I always thought he'd jump to the NBA whenever he left Kentucky. Like that would've been the reason. I mean, Arkansas? Really? He left the epicenter of college basketball for the state everyone always forgets even exists. Not sure what his recruiting pitch is going to be, but since he specializes in one and done lottery picks, probably doesn't matter. His resume of NBA alums speaks for itself. Just don't expect to actually compete for anything.

Posted by JerNYC on 7 Apr 2024 at 6:29PM
She'll get her championships in the WNBA. It's hard to carry a team on your back and do everything. Larry Bird tried. Couldn't do it. But put him in a Celtics uniform surrounded by HOF teammates and he won three championships. I am hoping they give the WNBA games some prime time coverage. And that these women can start making some real money. They already are on the college level with the NIL deals. But I think it's safe to say Clark deserves a seven figure deal as a player from day one and if she packs arenas like she did at Iowa, the money should be rolling in.
(#5593637) Re: Caitlin Clark

(#5593221) Re: Caitlin Clark

The final score was slightly misleading because Iowa was really pulling away but they made some terrible turnovers that let UConn back into the game. I don't think they're going to beat South Carolina unless Clark has a monster game. What they got away with tonight with all the turnovers won't work against SC.
(#5593217) Re: Caitlin Clark
Posted by Sir Gilmour of the GoldTable on 5 Apr 2024 at 11:44PM
It was a good win for Iowa. That late foul call on UConn was unfortunate, cost the team a chance to try and win it. Clark did create the third-quarter spark. Sunday's title game should be fun.
(#5593199) Caitlin Clark
Posted by JerNYC on 5 Apr 2024 at 8:49PM
Iowa outlasts a very tough UConn team and Paige Bueckers to return to the championship game for back-to-back years. Not Clark's finest game as a scorer, but she kept them in the game and got them back into the game despite missing every 3 in the first half.

It shouldn't even be a thought for him to go back for another year of college ball. This year was kind of a wash anyway coming back from the cardiac arrest and the fact that he could play again at all is kind of miraculous. Quite a few young people have died on the court over the years from cardiac arrest. Sometimes from an enlarged heart or a hole in the heart. Who knows how much that affected his play, physically and mentally. His numbers were not great. So he really should just stay in school and work on himself. It's sad how many young players rush themselves into being pros instead of just developing themselves.

I don't think people realize how unbearable watching any sport would be without defense. The only thing that actually makes a sport a real sport is defense. (#5578455) Re: 1961 baseball
Posted by JerNYC on 10 Feb 2024 at 10:03PM
I'm not saying the players themselves did anything but could it be MLB made sure the baseballs would fly outta the park that year? I think they call that "juicing" the balls. Something I noticed in 1960 looking at the MVP voting was that it was very evident that the AL had a really moribund year for offense. Maris' numbers for an MVP season were nothing special but it was hard to make a case for anyone else except Mantle and even his numbers in '60 were not eye popping. They probably should've been co-MVPs. The votes were very close.

And then you look at the 1961 MVP race and the stats just jump off the page. You had these guys were just tearing the cover off the ball. So something was maybe amiss or it was just a statistical anomaly that year.
(#5578366) Re: 1961 baseball
Posted by Robyn Hode on 10 Feb 2024 at 12:33PM
The Mick had a great season too. He was neck and neck with Maris till he got injured. Back then, no one questioned if something shady was going on and probably nothing really was. 40 years later, the stats of players like Luis Gonzalez clearly show he was roiding in 2001.

There was something very strange about that season. Obviously first thing that comes to mind is Roger Maris and the mythical 61 HRs. But here's the thing. That was Maris' greatest year by far. It was preceded by a pretty good though not especially remarkable MVP season in 1960. Nothing much before that indicated that he'd be any special player of note and nothing after 1961 was particularly noteworthy. What I was surprised to find out is that Maris was not the only one in 1961 to have an epic and extraordinary standalone season that never matched the rest of their careers.

Two other players, Jim Gentile and Norm Cash finished 3rd and 4th in MVP voting behind Maris and Mantle.

Norm Cash had a monster year that any other year would be the MVP. He hit .361 with 41 HRs and 132 RBIs. Led the league in BA, hits (193), OBP (.487), and OPS (1.148). He had a higher slugging percentage than Maris!

Jim Gentile out of nowhere seemingly nowhere smashes 46 HRs and finishes tied with Maris for RBIs with 141! He batted .302 with a 1.069 OPS. Also had a higher slugging percentage than Maris.

Maris, believe it or not, did not finish in the Top 3 for OBP, SLG, or OPS.

These three guys can never replicate anything even remotely close to their 1961 seasons ever again. How does something like that happen?

The Eagles and the Cowboys both reached out to Belichick after he left the Patriots but he said no. In talks with the Falcons, owner Arthur Blank insisted on keeping President Rich McKay, who Belichick supposedly wanted out. Blank cited loyalty.

I suspect Belichick would not get full control in Dallas if he went there. Stephen Jones runs a lot of the Cowboys operation with his older brother Jerry Jones Jr., keeping pops from making crazy draft picks. But a still fully loaded team that again falls short? Belichick might not want ultimate control.

I don't see Belichick coaching a college team. He is not known to be personable, warm or overly friendly. And players can move now with the transfer portal, hurting his control-freak nature. If Belichick ends up at Bowie State University or a similar school, I'll be shocked.

We know Belichick is a workaholic. Famously took only days off after Super Bowls before returning to work. And he has said he does not want to be in a big media market.

So, no real idea, just that a return to the NFL seems most likely.
(#5576401) Re: Recycled Coaches
Posted by JerNYC on 2 Feb 2024 at 8:15PM
Why would Jerry Jones give him full control? It's hard to see any team being more interested a year from now. I think he should consider going to the college level where he could probably coach until he drops and they'll let him make all the decisions.

What a flop by the Ravens. Complete total flop. Where was that high octane offense???? Where was Lamar??? I'm watching the game just like what is happening here...it's not like KC were the '85 Bears this year. Their defense wasn't overpowering anyone. I don't get it. It makes you question whether Lamar will ever be a championship QB or is he just another Cam Newton with great physical gifts but the inability to translate it when it matters most. It's not just natural talent. You have to have it between the ears too to know what to do when something isn't working.

I never followed his career but his stats are pretty impressive even for doing it all in Colorado. .316 career BA and .414 career OBP. Almost 600 doubles. Over 2500 hits. I see something where he said he tried PEDs. The voters are a pretty tough bunch. They must not equate him to the Sosa, McGwire, Bonds group.

But Beltre and Mauer were no-brainers.

I can't believe Andy Pettite is all the way down on the list. I think he belongs in the HOF. He was part of that Core Four. He was a longstanding pillar of that Yankees domination era from '96 to '09 except for a few years in Houston. His postseason record was really good. Okay, he didn't have the greatest ERA, but he was very consistent and solid. And look at the longevity.

This still wasn't their year. I don't think they would've beaten the Ravens. Their defense could barely contain Mahomes, imagine what Jackson would've done to them. But that was a winnable game against KC. It's never just that they lose, but how they lose. It's always something that makes you wince.

The road for them is never going to get easier. And they were lucky Joe Burrow got KOd this year with injuries. He's not going anywhere. Bengals will be back. Texans have a young stud now in Stroud. The AFC is rough.

Most of the receivers for GB never played with Rodgers. Love is their guy and they trust he'll find the one who gets open. And Aaron Jones ran through the Dallas defense to set it all up. Now a 10 point underdog to SF. Maybe this is the young team to break the losing streak there in the playoffs.

Loved all the comments! Dallas implodes again. We all knew they would. But their ceiling was never more than the NFC championship game. They had zero chance of getting past SF. But this is what they do. Congrats, Golfnut! I know you must be walking on sunshine. Who can be any happier than GB fans? Yeah okay maybe Detroit, but Detroit at least had real expectations and they were the favorite. Everyone thought Aaron Rodgers left GB in shambles and it would be years before they competed again. Nope. He blows his Achilles in Game 1 and the Pack win a playoff game without him. Can't get better than that for GB fans. And they'll still honor Rodgers after he retires but right now they won the breakup.

Packers at Cowboys

Cowboys at home are a completely different team than Cowboys on road. Dak at home is different from Dak on road. The Cowboys have all the ingredients. Packers are work in progress. Still it might be close.

Rams at Lions

Stafford vs Goff. Now McVay can show why he traded Goff and Goff can show he's learned something since. Stafford still has a great arm, and they've got some new people to catch the ball. Kupp isn't the same with the injuries.
Lions are good, now we see how good they really are.

And who knows how well Lamar will play in the playoffs? Haven't been his best performances. The Rams were close to beating the Ravens in Baltimore and lost in OT. Things change and Shanahan is a smart coach. Philly might right the ship. Dallas might somehow find itself in all the right circumstances. As long as Mahomes and Swift are playing the Chiefs are real. Bills, well, they can, but they won't. The Lions will go as far as Goff takes them. Miami can score on anyone.

Lamar outplayed Purdy on the road. If the MVP race is between those two, then yeah, Lamar has separated himself. Ï still think the Niners can run away with the NFC. Purdy had a bad game against an extremely tough defense. But he seems pretty even keeled so I expect he'll shake it off.

Sports media, within hours, have thrown Purdy under the bus and crowned Jackson MVP. This may last another week or two. 49ers, apparently, aren't Super Bowl champions yet. I wouldn't mind seeing Cowboys-Ravens. Especially the last drive by Dak with a minute to go and Dallas trailing 60-2.

A game only the Jets could play. They lead 27-7 over the Commanders who start Sam Howell. Howell is 6 of 22 for 56 yards and 2 INTs for a rating of 1.7. Game over, right? No, Commanders score 3 straight TDs with Jacoby Brissett replacing Howell and take a 28-27 lead. But the Jets win on an improbable 54 yd FG by Zeurlein with 10 seconds to go, 30-28.

The Jets head coach and GM will be returning next year. Their reward? A season with Aaron Rodgers, who if he had played this year, would have won the Super Bowl, in his own mind.

The funny thing is the teams that spend the most and stuff their rosters haven't had much luck in the postseason though they do tend to get to the postseason. Except for the Angels. lol Baseball can be so unpredictable. Nobody would have guessed the Houston Astros would become a perennial powerhouse after years in the cellar losing 100 plus games. They're not a sexy free agency destination. They rebuilt that organization from the ground up. You look at what the SF Giants did in their trilogy championship era without having to spend a fortune on big names. How about the 2014 and 2015 Kansas City Royals?
It's never about individual greatness. It's about having a complete team with strength in every area of the game. And being able to sustain it until the last out of the WS. But you never know at the start of the season unlike other sports which set of players will be able to do that.

Even his explanations are dishonest. Anyone watching the play can see his intent was to strike Nurkic, not to "sell the foul." He's done this most of his career and his is still somehow playing. The media is also portraying this as Green needing help and we should all show concern for him. Of course that media is ESPN which pays a lot of money to show NBA games.

I think Draymond is acting out because he's not that effective anymore and he's getting old. All he can fall back on is his toughness but it's not helping his team. The Insignificant Tournament? lol Basketball seems so undisciplined this year. Nobody is playing defense. At the bottom of the league are some really atrocious teams all of whom might give the '73 Sixers a run for the all time worst record. There are a few really good teams and a few nice surprises like the Timberwolves and the Magic. But it doesn't feel like there's any drama or real rivalries. The amount of hugging and high fives between teams after games is like a class reunion instead of heated competition. I don't mind that at the end of the season when they know it's their last game against each other, but it's December, try to act like you're not going to a club together after the game.

They'll be better off if they permanently switch him to an everyday hitter whether DH or put him in the OF. The Yankees certainly knew Babe Ruth was much more valuable as a hitter and they got plenty of value out of him. Realistically for the next five years the Dodgers need Ohtani to average around .300, 40 HR, and 110 RBI and hope of course that he exceeds those numbers. Which is what the Yankees would like to get out of Judge as well.

The Braves probably got the best deal and bargain for signing Matt Olson to less than 300 million. He had the best power numbers out of everyone in 2023.

One of the causes of this price escalation is the use of corporate tax breaks for box seats, luxury booths and the like. Those should not be allowed to be written off as business expenses. All those executives go to the games at no cost to them while the average Joe gets priced out.

From ESPN

Ohtani agreed on a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers on Saturday, by far the richest in the history of North American professional sports. A source said then that the majority of the contract would come in deferred money; under this structure, however, Ohtani is deferring more than 97% of his earnings. The deferred money -- totaling $680 million -- will be paid to Ohtani between 2034 and 2043, a source said.

They were using the Jays, Lou. Typical negotiating tactic. Act equally interested in another team to drive up the final offer. Dodgers must have started at 500 then maybe Blue Jays came in at 600 and that forced the Dodgers' hand. But I don't think Toronto was going to 800. And I don't think Ohtani really wanted to ever leave SoCal.

As much as I love sports, this kind of contract is bad for baseball, bad for the fans, and in a philosophical sense, bad for society. When our fathers were growing up, pro athletes were not so far removed from everyone else. Many of them worked second jobs or started their own businesses in the offseason. Fans could afford to go to every single home game if they wanted to. But society seemed to have its priorities in order. Let's make sure everyone can get a college/grad school education without drowning in student loans for the rest of their lives. Let's make sure everyone can own their own home at a reasonable price. Let's make sure everyone has access to good healthcare when they need it without going into bankruptcy.

He's not even pitching next year and he'll turn 30 next summer. The back end of this contract is really not going to age well. Even Ichiro at the end of his career with the Yankees was a far cry from his Seattle heyday when he got over 200 hits ten years in a row.

I mean, really, was there ever any other team for him? I think he was always going to sign with them and this whole circus was just designed to drive up his contract into the outer edges of financial insanity. 700 million is just so beyond comprehension for one player. And that opens the floodgates now for everyone else. Pete Alonso can ask for 450 million and say it's a bargain. He might get 500. The good thing is Soto will be on his contract year and players tend to put up career numbers in their contract years. That's why Rodon got his bloated contract. So, I think the Yankees need to just go for it next year. Judge and Cole are in their prime-y prime. Not getting any younger.

I don't know why the Mets picked up Severino. They always do that. Grab guys off the Yankees that used to be really good and hope they can find their mojo again.

What Juan Soto will show up, the one who couldn't hit anything the first half of the season when games mattered in San Diego, or the one who hit everything when the Padres were out of contention? New York is not San Diego, you either can play there or you can't. Still, Yankees need SOME help. Stanton is an automatic out. LeMahieu, since his big contract, is a .250 hitter. Rizzo hasn't been the same since the injury. Judge is the franchise, as long as he is healthy. So many bad moves by the Yankees in the last few years--Rodon may be the worst. At least they shipped Severino to the Mets where he'll watch balls leave Citi Field.

You're not watching the NBA Insignificant Tournament? lol I still can't figure out why fans should care about this.

Oh...how about Juan Soto the New York Yankee? They gave up a lot for him but he instantly makes that offense very dangerous. Still need a legit #2 ace behind Cole. I'm waiting to see what the Mets do. I know they're both in on the Japanese pitcher. And I think Ohtani is going to wind up with the Dodgers. Just feels that way. Doesn't disrupt his life and he goes to a proven winner with a storied history of HOF pitchers.

I think they got it right with the four they picked this year. Those are the best four teams right now. After they expand next year, I think there won't be so much emphasis on perfect records anymore. Playoffs are usually about who has the hot hand as opposed to who built up the best record. We just saw that most dramatically in baseball with all the 100 win teams going down.

He tore his Achilles. But supposedly there's a more cutting edge surgery now to repair it that allows athletes to return a lot sooner than in the past. Torn Achilles used to be an automatic career ender but you look at Kevin Durant and you wonder if it actually helped him. But KD was never much of an athlete anyway and he's never carried a lot of weight on his body so that might factor in too. Being a QB though and having to scramble and make very quick cuts sometimes, I don't know if Rodgers will have the same mobility that allowed him to do his magic on the field. I don't know if I'd want a gimpy Rodgers behind that O-line that couldn't stop a scarecrow.
(#5555452) Injuries
Posted by Robyn Hode on 25 Nov 2023 at 11:17AM
Are piling up this year in the NFL. With a 17 game season and games on Sunday, Monday and Thursday every week, there's more potential for injury. With this we get more blowouts as teams lose key players.

Of course, it doesn't matter to the television announcers. The games aren't played by players but by coaches. The players are simply pieces in a puzzle. When a player makes a great play it was because his Offensive or Defensive coordinator called a great play or a great defensive setup.

And, just what kind of injury did Rodgers really have? Players don't come back that soon from that kind of injury and Rodgers has been known to adjust the truth to his personal narrative.

All series best of three. No more than one day off between series. No separation between AL and NL. Seeding entirely by record. Because there's only 6 teams, top two would get a bye.

This I think would make everyone happy.

Maybe it's time to abolish the "World Series" and just make a final series every year between the Yankees and Dodgers. That would make everyone happy!

I refuse to watch. I am displeased at these being the final two teams. I wanted a rematch of last year. I watched NBA games instead.

That was a great game. Seager ties it in 9th and then Garcia walks off in 11th 6-5.

Oh how the Yankees could use a pitcher like Eovaldi.

Wait...
